Northeast India, comprising eight states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura—covers 262,230 square kilometers, about 8% of India’s landmass. Bordering Bhutan, China, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Nepal, it had a population of approximately 45.6 million per the 2011 Census, with an estimated 2024 figure of around 50 million. Each state has its own capital: Guwahati (Assam, largest city), Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), Imphal (Manipur), Shillong (Meghalaya), Aizawl (Mizoram), Kohima (Nagaland), Gangtok (Sikkim), and Agartala (Tripura). The region’s combined Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) was roughly ₹5.6 lakh crore (US$70 billion) in 2023-24, driven by agriculture, tourism, and hydropower. The currency is the Indian Rupee (INR). Known for its biodiversity, tribal cultures, and scenic landscapes, Northeast India is a tourist gem. Top places to visit include:
